Ancient Rome-Chapter 10 Vocabulary

patrician-wealthy and powerful citizens; 10% of Roman population
plebian-working/poor class;  90 % of population
representative-person who is voted for, or elected, to make decisions for the people
senate-governing body of people...where representatives work
dictator-a ruler with total and complete control
republic-type of government  where citizens choose the leaders
tribune-at first two plebians chosen to represent their interests in Senate
patriotism-sense of pride in one's country
caesar-ruler/dictator of Rome
emperor-ruler of an empire
gladiator-generally a prisoner or slave who served as a professional fighter; like MMA or boxing
catacomb-underground room used as a burial place, particularly for Christians
synagogue-Jewish place of worship; like a church
disciple-a follower of a certain group or religion
persecute-to punish others for their beliefs, like religion
auction-to sell off to the highest bidder
pope-leader of the Roman Church (and later Catholic Church)
pillage-to rob someone
vandal-a person who destroys proerty
